Happy Bastille Day! Today the French celebrate the event that sparked the French revolution. In honor of our Francophone friends, what is your favorite French thing? Bonus points for answers en français.

I was in Paris for Bastille Day way back in 1990, and we were staying just a few blocks from the actual Bastille. Some of my travel group and I left the hotel around 7:00 PM with orders from the chaperones to be back by midnight. Not 30 seconds after we left we were swept up by the crowd and sharing from champagne bottles being passed around the crowd.

We danced, we drank and I remember kissing/making out with at least two people I didn't know (I'm pretty sure were women...I won't say how I know that).

We crawled back into the hotel around 6:00 AM as the chaperones were sitting down for breakfast.

Okay, it's not a "thing" but it is a pleasant memory...

At around 2am this morning, I was checking the news headlines and my blurry eyes decided to excite me by making me see the word "militants" as "mutants". For a few awesome seconds, I thought that Pakistan was using genetically modified beings to battle the Taliban. ALAS. I should know by now that life isn't going to get that interesting any time soon.

The few hours that I do sleep are filled with the most vivid dreams. Recently I dreamed about a Nazi unit who were conducting tests on a bunch of prisoners. The Nazis had developed technology to make the people come straight back to life after they'd been "tested" on - the tests included crushings and electrocutions and all kinds of nasty stuff. No matter what they did to these prisoners, they just came back to life in one piece (just like a video game, I guess?) and over time the prisoners were used to getting killed and became kind of numb to it. Eventually the Nazis and the prisoners started to actually get along, seeing as all the evil actions had now become strangely routine and no longer really hurt anybody. Finally, the war ends and the allied forces storm the factory and take away all the Nazis. The prisoners are now forced to actually live and, having died every day for the last few years, become so horribly bored and numb to new experiences that they all return to the factory and continue to kill each other, over and over again, until the end of time.

I wake up a lot with a :/ on my face.

So yeah. That's the kind of thing my brain decides to conjure up during sleep. AWESOME. Between that and dealing with (unfortunately-not-actually) mutants in the news, things are starting to get weird. Not quite as weird as the following gif though, thank goodness.

I have such a love/hate relationship with Lady GaGa, you'd think she was my parent! One week I'm super anti because of the stupid things she wears/says/does, then a few days later I'm joining "gaga for GaGa" Facebook groups because I can't stop listening to "Love Game." It's a tough tango.

Today is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, I find the fact that she loves The Muppets. Fabulous -- we should get together and watch "Muppets Take Manhattan" sometime. But I can not handle the fact that she murdered, unstuffed and skinned our beloved Animal, simply so she could have a new skirt!

Let's start the countdown until PETA tosses a bucket of Muppet blood (it's Hi-C) in her poker face. And by PETA I mean, Puppets For the Ethical Treatment of Animal.

dunno about you, but i looooove the skirt -- woman! wooooooman!

(Wow, but this is nerdy.)

I have a Star Trek costume question about costuming for girls, and I figured this comm would be most knowledgeable.

Because don't lie, all y'all have Star Trek costumes in your closet.

Do you all like wearing the TOS era dresses or the tunics better? I'd like to have a TOS uniform dress, but I'm having trouble deciding what's the best method of getting one. Do you like making them yourself? Buying them from a specific place? Also, why is it so stinking hard to get the dress in yellow?

Dragon*Con is a fair sized Science Fiction and Gaming Convention held in Atlanta Georgia every summer. Every year some folks from Star Trek come and do appearences. I love to see them and hear what they have to say about their experices on the show and what they do in real life and stuff like that. Johnathon Frakes, btw, is frakking hilarious!

This summer, Dragon*Con is Labor Day weekend, September 4-7, 2009. There are several Start Trek actors making an appearence! Chief amongst them are Loenard Nimoy and Patrick Stewart!

The general Dragon*Con website is: http://www.dragoncon.org/index.php

Leonard Nimoy's bio is: http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_guest_detail.php?id=1987

Patrick Stewart's bio is: http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_guest_detail.php?id=2104

There are quite a few more ST people coming this year too! Janeway and Parris and Kim and Travis Mayweather and some others I can't think of right now! If you have not planned to come to Dragon*Con this year, rethink that decision!

I read the rules and I do believe this post is allowed. Please forgive me if I am in error!

The Catholic Church has heaped praise on the latest Harry Potter film after previously accusing the books of promoting witchcraft and the occult.

The Vatican's official newspaper lauded Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for its "clear" depiction of the eternal battle between good and evil represented by the struggle between Harry and his nemesis, the evil sorcerer Lord Voldemort.

L'Osservatore Romano said the movie was the best adaptation yet of the JK Rowling books, describing it as "a mixture of supernatural suspense and romance which reaches the right balance".

Bolded for tl;dr crowd :) )

Emma Watson Joins Forces with Marilyn Manson

It’s one of the most unlikely pairings in the world of entertainment- Emma Watson is set to work with none other than Marilyn Manson on an upcoming movie.

The “Harry Potter” hottie, who hasn’t done any other films outside of the series, will play a princess in the still-untitled movie that’s said to be a goth-inspired reworking of “Cinderella.”

As for the recent rumors that Emma and her “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” costar Robert Pattinson had a romantic connection at one time, Miss Watson has tactfully shot down the notion.

In a recent interview, she said, “He’s just a good friend! Girls love him [but] we’re just friends- but he sure was great to work with.”

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is struggling to find a girlfriend, despite having thousands of adoring female fans around the world.

The actor admits his schedule isn't too busy to fit in a partner - but he still can't find the right woman to settle down with.

He explains, "You know, I'm not really doing the dating thing. I don't feel like I'm in the world of dating.

"I don't feel like a young twentysomething. I'm happy working but it's not a case of 'I don't have time for a girlfriend'. I do. It's just like everyone else who's single I suppose."

Harry Potter star Emma Watson is embracing her dark side by taking on a role in shock rocker Marilyn Manson's creepy movie musical, according to reports.

The 19 year old will don her dancing shoes to play a princess in Manson's as yet untitled Gothic musical, a retelling of the Cinderella fairytale.

Watson, who shot to fame as the studious Hermione Granger in the hit wizard films, is the last of the Harry Potter stars to branch away from the franchise.
